The QLTT is the conversion test that enables lawyers to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales. Those lawyers eligible to sit the test must be qualified in jurisdictions that are recognised by the Law Society. Details of those recognised jurisdictions can be obtained from the Law Society.
The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test(QLTT) is the conversion test that enables certain lawyers to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales. Those lawyers eligible to sit the test must be foreign lawyers or overseas lawyers qualified in jurisdictions that are recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority of England and Wales (the Solicitors Regulation Authority) or must be barristers qualified to practise in England and Wales. Details of these recognised jurisdictions can be obtained from the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
CLT is fully validated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as an accredited testing organisation for the QLTT. Test examiners and tutors are specialists in their subject areas and have extensive experience and expertise. They are qualified solicitors who have experience of both practise and of teaching Solicitors Regulation Authority examinations.
CLT offers the test(s) in the following countries: England, Scotland, India, the Caribbean and the USA.
Certificate of Eligibility
The test covers four main subject areas (known as Heads). Before sitting the test all candidates must have obtained a Certificate of Eligibility from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). This Certificate states which Head(s) a candidate is required to pass and any requirement for further training, if any. This Certificate is valid for a period (usually three years from the date of issue) during which time the candidate can sit the QLTT. The last QLTT tests will take place in 2013. No candidate will be able to sit the test without providing a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility.
Any queries relating to eligibility or exemptions from any of the Test(s) must be raised directly with the SRA (info.services@sra.org.uk) or telephone information services on +44(0) 1527 504450.
The last date for submission to the SRA for Certificates of Eligibility under the QLTT was 31st August 2010. The new Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) replaces the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations (QLTR) and the QLTT for those candidates who did not apply for a Certificate of Eligibility by 31st August 2010 and also for those candidates whose Certificate of Eligibility under the QLTT has expired. Information on the QLTS can be found on the SRA’s website at www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/qlts.page.
