TRAINEE CPD FROM 1 SEPTEMBER 2011
Trainee CPD is an essential part of 'PEAT 2' - the new traineeship -commencing on 1 September 2011.
A 60 hour Trainee CPD requirement for trainee solicitors replaces the old Professional Competence Course (PCC) as a required element of PEAT 2, for trainees commencing on or after 1 September 2011.
*CLT and the University of Strathclyde have together become the first provider to be authorised by the Law Society of Scotland to run Trainee CPD.*
TRAINEE CPD - THE REQUIREMENTS
60 hours of TCPD require to be undertaken by the trainee over the course of their two year traineeship: - 40 hours must be from an 'authorised provider'
- 20 hours must undertaken in addition to the 40 'authorised' hours, but not necessarily from an 'authorised' provider.
- 30 hours must be undertaken by month 15 of the traineeship
- A ‘Mandatory Ethics Course’ must be undertaken between months 9 and 15.
- There are no other prescribed courses - each TCPD hour is intended to assist individual trainees in the areas they need it.
WHY CHOOSE THE CLT/STRATHCLYDE PROGRAMME?
The solution from CLT and the University of Strathclyde responds to the needs of all types of legal practices - regardless of size, practice area and location - and places employers and trainees in full control of ensuring their trainees fulfil the 60 hour requirement.
YOUR TRAINEESHIP, YOUR WAY: - You purchase the required 40 ‘authorised’ hours.
- To ensure your trainees always have access to the highest quality TCPD throughout the traineeship, we offer you 20 'bonus hours' at no additional cost.
There are no prescribed courses. You have a free choice in selecting courses that benefit your business and your trainee, from our extensive programme: - Legal TCPD
- Professional Skills TCPD
LEGAL TCPD AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TCPD
The programme is split into two types of TCPD, which you can select for your trainees over the course of two years: - Legal TCPD
- Professional Skills TCPD
Each month, we will send you an electronic newsletter keeping you informed of TCPD which will be available to you over the course of the next quarter, so that you and your trainees can plan Trainee CPD that supports your business and your trainee.
Legal TCPD
The PEAT 2 Outcomes require trainees to increase and improve their knowledge of the law: - CLT runs over 50 conferences, over 200 seminars, and over 200 webinars per annum.
- You can choose from award-winning courses which are authorised as suitable Legal TCPD, in line with the work trainees are doing and the knowledge you need them to have for your business.
- Webinars are an excellent way for your trainees to undertake Legal TCPD. Taking place over lunch time, they minimise disruption to the working day.
- The monthly newsletter will detail courses in the forthcoming quarter, so you can plan with your trainees.
Professional Skills TCPD
The PEAT 2 Outcomes focus on ‘professionalism’: - CLT will run up to 4 day-long ‘Professional Skills TCPD’ events every year
- Each day-long event (6 hours) will comprise a number of seminars and workshops in the area of ‘professionalism’
- Topics will cover the key PEAT 2 Outcomes - communication, interviewing, negotiation, writing and drafting, advocacy and practice management amongst others.
- Courses will be highly practical, delivered by CLT and Strathclyde’s expert speakers.
- The ‘Mandatory Ethics Course’ *will run up to twice a year as part of the ‘Professional Skills TCPD’ events - ensuring you meet this requirement.
- You can choose to send your trainee on one or more of these events in line with their development needs.
- Detailed course information, on the next Professional Skills TCPD event, will be made available to you in the monthly newsletter.
